Love Changes Everything to quote a Honeymoon Suite song is exactly the way a massive Timmins crowd responded when the band not only pulled out all of their hits but did so with a killer show at The Great Canadian Kayak Festival Saturday night.
This has been a banner year for Timmins music fans and it only got better when Canuck metal bangers Helix smacked the crowd upside the head for 60 minutes with opening sets from local rockers Drivyn and Timmins born A.K. McLeod now out of Hamilton played his hometown for the first time.
HMS had the entire crowd singing Wave Babies, Stay In The Light, Feel It Again and New Girl Now while lead vocalist Johnnie Dee sounding the best I have heard him through the years connected with a rain soaked crowd.
It was as if the crowd was transported back to 1985.
The entire band with killer solos all night from guitarist Derry Grehan, and solid backing from keyboard man Peter Nunn, bassist Gary Lalonde and massive stick work from drummer Dave Betts rocked a very large audience.
A.K. McLeod delivered a very solid blues rock set and local hard rockers Drivyn totally impressed the crowd with originals and covers of Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix.
After the Fireworks Helix hit the stage at 10 p.m.
The Canuck metal rockers played their hits Wild In the Streets, The Kids Are All Shakin, Rock You and others like the killer Deep Cuts The Knife while lead vocalist Brian Vollmer charmed the crowd with in between song banter.
In a big surprise was the band’s newer songs like Gene Simmons Says Rock Is Dead and Even Jesus Wasn’t Loved in His Hometown drew heavy applause.
Timmins Kayak Fest has continued to evolve with a great roster of artist music bookings and literally thousands of people have responded in a big way.
