BOB SEGER-RIDE OUT-“OLDER, WISER, AND STILL WITH THE FIRE DOWN BELOW”-CD REVIEW BY JOHN EMMS

With Ride Out Bob Seger’s latest album, it’s clear his passion and songwriting gift has not left him.

In fact, it’s focused like the growl of a classic Mustang Cobra.

This album is going to surprise people.

Why?

Because the new songs plus the great covers have a solid chance of finding a whole new younger fanbase.

“Let’s talk about chemicals in rivers, let’s talk about cash as king” on the solid It’s Your World is going to find a new audience, while the title track Ride Out bristles with lyrics “where the hills meet the valleys, far from campaigns and rallys’

Both of these tracks could easily make it on to a new Seger tour setlist.

The album starts with a cover of John Hiatt’s Detroit Made with it’s distinctive “”American Rock”” via Nashville groove and the Nashville sound is a major ambience on Seger’s excellent cover of Steve Earle’s The Devil’s Right Hand.

The Nashville players like Glen Worf and Rob McNelley command major respect but it’s clear when Seger’s Silver Bullet Band gets a hold of any song on this album it’s going to be “road worthy dramatic”

Elsewhere, on the acoustic side Seger goes into the heartland with help from Vince Gill on high harmony on the track Listen, while he looks backward on the poignant All Of The Roads and the short You Take Me In where he declares ‘Sometimes I’m frail, sometimes I fall, sometimes my best intentions bring nothing at all”

In fact, You Take Me In could be thought of as a coming of age song from the other side considering Seger is 69 years old.

For his 17th album Seger has created an honest and distinctive album of new songs that deliver.

The album comes out tomorrow Oct 14th.,
