BENMONT TENCH-YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY-“AND THE SINGER’S GONNA SING A SONG”-CD REVIEW JOHN EMMS

b tench

Benmont Tench has found his voice.

It’s real, earthy, unmasked, and the results are going to really surprise everyone.

In fact, You Should Be So Lucky is a superb roots record, that sounds gloriously organic.

For people living under a rock, Tench is best known as the keyboard virtuoso with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

On the opening track Today I Took Your Picture Down, the soulful, easy going vocal is underscored by a supple piano solo.

Next up, Veronica reveals a superb pop song that comes out in an almost Jayhawks vibe.

I’ll be damned if Veronica is not a radio hit folks!

And while were at it that goes ditto for the excellent Blonde Girl, Blue Dress

If that was not enough this work is produced by the legendary Glyn Johns

Elsewhere, Hannah has a Willie Nile vibe, and the title track has a rave-up 60’s influence that weaves and bends.

The backing core band of bassist Don Was, multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns, guitarist Blake Mills and drummer Jeremy Stacey are in the pocket.

Heck, they sound like they are having fun.

Guest players include Tom Petty, Ringo Starr, and Ryan Adams among others

Tench pulls out killer dynamics on his cover of Corrina, Corrina and gets a lot of air on the instrumental standout Ecor Ridge

I’ll be honest I would love to hear the vinyl version of this album.

According to Universal Canada release date is Feb 25 2014, however the digital version is already available on ITunes, etc.

JOHN EMMS is a veteran music journalist, radio host and musician with Canadian blues/roots rockers THE SHAFTMEN
